I'm outraged! « Thread Started on Jul 5, 2007, 12:32pm »
Why do dog food factories use horses for their food? I mean people have always eaten cows, so why can't they make dog food of cows? We have plenty of cows!
I know! And, they're taking wild horses off the range to make more room for cows! Cows ruin the land, because they've only been bred to eat, not anything else! Horses are soooo much more valuable than cows. Plus, if you look at the history of the horse. The first horse, Hycotherium(sp?), lived in North America. So horses are native! Plus, cows smell bad.
This is one argument I'm not going to pick sides on, because I'm in the middle.
Dog food factories use whatever is not wanted from the butchers, including cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, and horses. I'm big in the cattle businesses, and they don't ruin the land as much as people think. Yes they do things, but they are very important to us. We must use them for our on food. If we use a bunch of cattle for dog food, what are we going to eat? We would have to use a lot of cows for dog food, there is a bunch of dog food made every year.
But I don't believe we should take wild horses off the land and kill them. But some people few it like killing deer, bears, and other animals.
And Spirit I have a question. You said "because they've only been bred to eat, not anything else!" How about wild horses, people did not breed them. They are bred to survive, and eat off the range.
Like I said I'm not going to be big into the argument because I can see both sides.
What I mean is, cows are pretty much helpless when it comes to surviving. And I don't think we need cows as much, I'm a vegetarian! Sometimes I have fish, but nothing else. Red meat usually isn't as good for you. We can eat a LOT of other things.
I've seen some before and after pictures of land before the cows came and after. The after picture wasn't pretty.
But now the problem with vegetables is the gas prices. The government is wanting to make a type of gas out of corn, which will make the price of everything go up. The corn prices will go up, then farmers will want to start selling corn and leave their crops. So then the other crop's prices will go up because of supply and demand. Making grain prices go up, and the cost of owning horses and other animals. Thats the problem no body knows what to use, because there will be problems with everything. Everything will affect everything and people will get mad.
What? If you're talking about biodiesal, that is wrong. My uncle is like, the one who is revolutionizing biodiesal. They go around and take away the used vegetable oil from restaurants and make it into biodiesal. Farmers are already growing more corn, but because of the demand for corn syrup, not gas.
I think that cows are good, and I'm not a vegetarian. I love beef. But, I do think that there are too many cows. The world would be a great place if humans were vegetarians, because then there wouldn't be all the trouble about breeding animals for food, but it would be very hard for many people, me included, to become vegetarians.
However, I do think that horses shouldn't be used for dog food. For one thing, if it was cows it would be slightly different. They would be bred for it, and so it wouldn't damage their population numbers. If they're using wild horses as dog food that could seriously damage horse populations.
According to the equine protection network horses are not actually being slaughtered for dog food. It's done for humans to eat. Thats disgusting! You would think I would feel the same as I do about cows, but horses have done more than cows. Basically cows provide us with food.
Heh heh, I know. I convert cat people to horse people. But I agree completely with you. I'm sure we could live in a world without cows, but it's hard to imagine life without horses.

Like Jess, I'm in the middle on this one. I'm not a vegetarian, and would never be one. It's not healthy for people not to eat meat, because are born omnivors. And disgusting things like tofu, I would never want to eat again. So cows are needed, but I agree that there are many out there and shouldn't be that many.
However, in other countries, cows are considered sacred because it is believed that the spirits of ancestors once lived in cows and the people believe you could be eating your ancestor. Extremely unlikely, but you can't tell people that they're nuts because this is how they've been for generations. So they turn to horses.
But why should we have to give them our horses? And more importantly, why is it gone about in such an inhumane way? Horses are left hung on ropes to suffucate. They are cut on the throat and left to bleed to death. People abuse and neglect them until they are skinny and deemed, "of no worth" and sent to a slaughter house that only considers a horse to be "profit". It disgusts me how people are so horrible and heartless.

Here's what's really going on:
Here's a little blurb I wrote for my college Biology class. I know its about cows, but it illustrates just a taste of Monsanto. Monsanto is an evil food manufacturing company who...here, I'll just tell you.
rBGH It benefits nobody (except Monsanto)
What it is: Genetically engineered milk. Hormones are injected cows to make them produce more milk than they normally would.
The Cattle: When rBGH is injected, cattle are more likely to develop mastitis or “inflammation of the udder”. Mastitis makes the milk unfit for human consumption anyway. Data shows that there is an increase of 19% in somatic cells, which are bacteria and pus in the milk.
The Farmers: Farmers, especially small farmers, have to go out of business because of rBGH and 10,000-30,000 farms have already given up dairying. Monsanto and/or the FDA are suing those who do stay in business and chose to label their milk “rBGH free”. Monsanto, continuing his war against small farms is preventing research against and showing that rBGH is harmful from being published. A New York farmer reported that he lost 25% of his herd to rBGH and many other have submitted similar grim reports, all of which have of course been ignored by Monsanto. Also, the government had paid some farmers to cull their cattle hoping that they (the government) would get more milk out of the fewer remaining cattle without nagging from the farmers.
The Public: Also, rBGH encourages cancer in humans. When a 4-year-old or older human consumes rBGH milk, it acts like a cancer simulator and causes “uncontrolled cell division” a.k.a. cancer.
My opinion: In my opinion, rBGH and Hormone Growth in bovine milk is negative for everyone with the exception Monsanto. It is definitely bad for the planet earth and her inhabitants.
And Now for the Story about pet food:
Monsanto makes pet food out of cattle, sheep, and swine carcassess deemed "unfit" for human consumption, meaning the diseased ones. Then they bring in dead cats and dogs euthanized at shelters and "humane" societies, collars still on the dead animals. Then they bring in euthanizedd horses and slaughtered horses and roadkill. Note that the drug used to euthanizee ((put animals to sleep)) animals is lethal and the carcasss of animal that were euthanized should not be consumed by another animal or human.
Then, once Monsanto has all theses dead bodies of animals. They put them on a conveyor belt and send them into a huge blender where these animals are ground up together. I won't go into detail on this---I'm sure you all have imaginations. Then, they send the meat out on another conveyor belt and then into a huge tank where they boil it. Then they take all the water out of it and turn it into "cute little cookie-cutter shapes of dog bones and fishies and put it into Meow Mix bags and sell it. Then we take it home and feed this stuff to our pets.
A few months ago, some jerk who is (I hope was, but I doubt it) employed by Monsanto, let rat poison into this already sickly concoction. Thousands of beloved pets died and Monsanto was sued multiple times, but to no avail. The government is too fond of its beloved Monsanto.
The horse that I leased for 2 1/2 years died a couple moths ago. Since I never owned him, I couldn't say what I wanted done with his body. So the rendering company took it away. It is illegal to bury horses on land, but people do it anyway because they do not want their best friends to be ground up and served to cats and dogs around the country. Who knows where my best friend. I know he wasn't buried in honor (He probably wasn't buried at all), but I can only hope his body never went to Monsanto. Unfortunatelyy, chances are high that he did.
I am sorry if I made anyone puke when they read this message. But I believe people should know. I will find out more about this subject as my time permits.
Thank you for reading.

P.S. I hate Monsanto. May they all go broke and live in dumpsters. I like that thought.

Good article, however, that one sentance is not true. It depends where you live and what your zoning laws are.
I've lost and buried 2 horses on my property over the years, 1 to old age and the other to colic, (R.I.P) We had to call the Zoning Commisioner, and One Cal l (call before digging to make sure there arean't any water lines, sewer, etc) once that was all approved, I was able to have them legally buried on my own property. You just have to check with your local laws and regulations per where you live.
